Did you know that, after Switzerland, Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe ?
Many people tend to only associate
Spain
with sand, sea, sun and sangria and are surprised to find that
Spain
also offers a wide range of winter sports.
Spain
's number one location for winter sports, the Sierra Nevada, is located just under two hours drive from the Costa del Sol. It has the best snow and the longest season - usually from December to May - in the country. It has as 61km of ski slopes with 45 pistes and 6 off-piste routes. There are 2 cable cars, 12 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts. The ski resort is usually open from 9am to 5pm however since 1994 you can ski at night at weekends and bank holidays as lighting has been installed along the El Rio slope.
If the reason you have never been to Sierra Nevada is because you haven't got the right ski gear, then that's no longer a valid excuse because everything you need can be hired on a daily basis. If your excuse is that you can't ski, then forget that too because there is no shortage of instructors in the ski schools that will assist everyone from beginners to experts.

Pradollano - The resort village
Sierra Nevada´s village area has been greatly improved due to the construction of new alpine-style buildings and one great feature is that they have built a four-storey underground car park with a capacity of 2,880 vehicles so no worries about parking.
There are a variety of services available in the village including a number of quality hotels in a range of categories which include jacuzzi, squash, workout areas, sauna and indoor swimming pools. There are also shops, night clubs, pubs and bars, discotheques etc. There is a new medical centre, child day-care centre, banks with ATM´s, supermarkets, sports and fashion boutiques, gift shops, magazine and newspaper kiosks, ski rental, photo-developing services, hairdressers, car rental, taxi service and a pharmacy.
Most of the facilities are located around the main square. From here you can catch the small tourist train that takes you around the resort with ease or you can get a lift to the peak and maybe stop off at one of the bars and restaurants for a hot chocolate and take in the panoramic views along the way.
With the resort being just 30 minutes away from the city of Granada - that offers such historical grandeur and World Heritage monuments such as the Alhambra Palace, Generalife Gardens and Albayzin - there really is nowhere else in the world where you can be swimming in the sea or playing golf in the sun in the morning and then within such a short time, be skiing or snow-boarding at one of the top ski resorts in the world - No wonder then that it was chosen as the host of the World Alpine Ski Championships in February 1996 !
